WELSH PIPE DREAM BECOMES REALITY
13 March, 2007: One Welsh team has returned from Europe with a smile recently. Their arrival back in Newport marked the completion of a first European contract by Gwent’s most promising business.
Waste management specialists GD Environmental have successfully completed the extrusion welding contract for Asset International’s huge High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) pipes in Calais, France.
Managing director, and Welsh Entrepreneur of the Year, James Norvill says that the extrusion welding service is rapidly becoming one of GD Environmental’s principal services.
“The demand for extrusion welding is growing across the UK and Europe, particularly sewage pipes, tank installations and landfill lining,” says James.
“This highly skilled and physically demanding process requires a great deal of concentration, and we have invested heavily over the last 18 months to develop our dedicated and experienced team.”
GD Environmental is one of Wales’s true success stories. Launched by James Norvill in 2003, at the age of 23, the company trebled its turnover in just two years.
Based in Newport, GD Environmental has since grown year on year an average of 126 per cent, with the core team of 50 people growing at the rate of one a fortnight, making them one of the fastest growing waste management companies in Europe.
These remarkable results have been achieved by ploughing back profits of £750,000 into the expansion.
It is this spirit of adventure that secured James the title of Welsh Entrepreneur of the Year from the British Chamber of Commerce in 2006.
“Our success across the entire business is largely due to our continued heavy investment in advanced machinery, tools and vehicles,” says James.
GD Environmental will continue its policy of reinvestment, with ambitious plans including the building of waste transfer stations in Cardiff and Monmouthshire, and a £7m turnover by 2009.
GD Environmental’s core business is waste management but has expanded its activities into many allied specialist fields, including pipe welding, drain services, skip hire, asbestos disposal and tank cleaning.
