Ambitious New Year’s resolution for GD Environmental

Rapid Growth for GD Environmental

Newport-based waste management specialist, GD Environmental, has got the New Year off to a flying start with an investment of over £330,000 in specialist equipment, vehicles and infrastructure to help fund its ambitious growth plans.

The company, which hopes to reach an annual turnover of £7m by 2009, has bought vehicles worth £236,000 including a chain lift skip lorry, a high volume jet vacuum unit, and a 2000 gallon tanker. It has also invested £100,000 in drainage and new roads on its site in Newport.

The new equipment will enable GD Environmental to adapt and respond to the increasing demand for waste management services, particularly in drainage which has seen an increase in demand following adverse weather conditions across the UK this winter. Meanwhile, the purchase of new skip lorries will enable GD Environmental to transfer and recycle up to 23,000 tonnes of dry waste a year, making the firm one of the largest in Wales.

Wels Entrepreneur of the Year and managing director of GD Environmental, James Norvill said: “It is essential that we continue to reinvest in new people, vehicles and equipment to assure we can satisfy the demands of our growing client base across the UK and Europe, which includes Corus, Arriva, the Millennium Stadium and the Association of British Ports.

“In addition to purchasing specialist vehicles and equipment, since September 2005 we have made a monthly reinvestment of £30,000 into new skip containers and appointed 27 new specialist staff, including a sales team, to keep up with rapid growth in the sector.”

GD Environmental is a complete waste management company which specialises in all forms of wet and dry waste disposal, as well as offering skip hire, drain services and recycling facilities. It offers the only asbestos transfer station in Gwent, Monmouthshire and surrounding areas. Recent work of the firm includes the cleaning and maintenance of the Porth relief road in the Rhondda Valley, which is currently the largest civil engineering contract of its kind in the UK.

Formed from a merger between Gwent Drain Services Ltd and Marine and Industrial Services Ltd in 2004, GD Environmental has grown to be one of the largest companies of its kind in south Wales and now operates in markets across Wales and the South West, as well as in Europe where it operates a specialist extrusion pipe welding service.

Since it was established GD Environmental has expanded at a rate of 126 per cent year on year, increased its full time staff from two to 40, established a client base of more than 350 and has a predicted annual turnover of £2.6 million by April this year – a leap from £0.4 million in 2004.

Norvill continues: “The success of the last few years has been great. Not only have we broken into the European market with our specialist pipe welding service, we are also expanding our recycling and skip services. With the increased public awareness of today’s environmental issues, the implications of handling toxic waste and its importance on the political agenda, it is crucial that we continue to meet the increased demands of our customers while complying with the latest legislation.

“Our aim is to become ‘the household name’ for all waste and drainage requirements across Wales and have ambitious plans for the GD brand. We also hope to move into schools to educate young people on recycling and green issues, in particular to combat the high levels of fly tipping that is a problem for councils across Wales. Further to this we are looking to diversify into several niche markets and continue our growth within a range of European markets. It’s going to be a big year for us.”
