A leading Newport drainage specialist has completed one of the UK’s most challenging underground CCTV surveying contracts as part of the £450m new Uskmouth Power Station project, Newport.
Newport-based GD Environmental was called in by Dawnus Construction to provide detailed groundwork’s surveys ahead of the development of the new station.
The complex contract involved a team of specialist underground confined space trained operators using hi-tech camera recording equipment to survey four large rooms over 384 sq m in size.
GD Environmental’s mission was to find any drainage networks, channels or pathways to other rooms or areas underground that could effect the rooms being filled in.
To access the rooms the team had to travel 70 feet from the top of the site to the rooms via a heavy duty winch.
James Norvill, Managing Director of GD Environmental, said, “Dawnus called us in as we have many years experience within the CCTV drain surveying industry. This is difficult and challenging work for the individuals concerned, who are all leading experts in this environment.
“This year we have invested heavily in the latest digital recording and processing technology which allows us to provide accurate footage of any drain from a small as 100 mm to a chamber or 3 meter diameter pipe.
“The Uskmouth power station project is a mammoth construction scheme for South East Wales and we are very pleased to have played our part in helping it come to fruition.”
The Uskmouth scheme is being developed by Severn Power Ltd, which is scheduled to bring the plant on-line in 2010.
The Severn Power project will play an important role in delivering efficient and competitive energy for UK customers in the coming years.
The new plant will be built on the site of the former Uskmouth A coal-fired power station, next to the existing Uskmouth Power Plant on the banks of the River Usk.
Since GD Environmental was established in 2004 through the merger of Gwent Drain Services and Marine and Industrial Services Ltd, the company has expanded at a rate of 850 per cent year over the last 4 years and has established a client base of more than 400 regular account customers.
Originally a core drainage business, GD Environmental has expanded into several new markets including skip hire, recycling, cctv drain surveying, environmental cleaning and recycling. The company also operates one of the few licensed asbestos transfer stations available in Wales.
