RECYCLING SPECIALIST BAGS-UP 18% HIKE IN ANNUAL GROWTH
A South Wales recycling specialist has followed a £1.5m investment in a new waste recycling facility in Gwent by posting an 18% hike in business.
The massiVe investment by GD Environmental has placed the firm at the forefront of efforts in Wales to lead the way in the recycling of domestic and commercial waste, and led to the creation of 15 new jobs during a difficult 2008.
Within its skip business alone, Newport-based GD has increased sales by 35% and expanded its fleet to help transport more than 300,000 tonnes of waste this year from commercial and domestic premises across South Wales.
“In the past year we have created 15 new jobs within our skip hire and recycling services and have generated 400 regular account customers across Wales and the West Country,” explains Managing Director James Norvill.
“GD continues to set the benchmark for a green operation within the waste disposal industry through recycling more than 90% of all transferred waste via our new £1.5m waste recycling facility and we have bold plans to become one of the first carbon neutral waste management companies in Wales by 2010.”
Mr Norvill says GD’s growth has been against a backdrop of a difficult trading environment for the waste management industry, with a fall-off in the development of residential property, the increase in fuel costs and the recent slump in the value of scrap metal from £175 per tonne this summer to just £25 per tonne in October.
“To stay ahead of the competition GD has diversified into several new markets including inert tipping, demolition and muck clearance,” added the MD.
“In addition to initiatives such as our Carbon Neutral recycling program which has enjoyed great support during their efforts to lower the carbon footprint of sporting events across Wales.
“The Carbon Neutrals has successfully recycled more than 20,000 dropped plastic drinking glasses during rugby internationals in Cardiff this year.”
James also believes the company’s nationally recognised Skip Car has helped raise GD’s profile within a highly competitive industry in Wales.
In the Last year the Skipcar has set a Guinness Land Speed Record for the world’s fastest skip and has featured on several high profile events including the Six Nations Championship and the Wales GB Rally Championship.
Gerwyn Holmes, GD Environmental Marketing Manager, added, “The Skipcar has been instrumental in driving sales and brand awareness. It has also enjoyed a phenomenal online presence being watched over 111,000 times on Youtube and has an average 1,000 hits per week on its official home page.
“The vehicle is actually an 8-yard builder’s skip built onto the chassis of a Subaru Impreza rally car and now has a truly cult following.”
Named in the FG 50 for the second year running and recent winner of the BCC Welsh Entrepreneur of the Year and Green Company of the Year awards, GD Environmental has ambitions to reach an annual turnover of £7m in 2009 through expanding its green skip hire operation to Bristol and Swansea.
GD’s client base across the UK includes Corus, Arriva, the Millennium Stadium and The Celtic Manor.
It specialises in all forms of wet and dry waste disposal, as well as offering skip hire, drain services and recycling facilities. It offers the only asbestos transfer station in South East Wales.
