Welsh skip hire and waste management company, GD Environmental, joined forces with DIY SOS and local tradesmen to make a Monmouthshire family's dream a reality.
In a moving show of community strength, GD Environmental and the tradesmen and businesses of South Wales banded together to support DIY SOS in the construction of a new home for an extremely deserving, local family.
Charlotte and Rob Fairlie of Hereford Road, had been married for two years when Charlotte suffered a serious stroke, just minutes after giving birth to their twins in December 2014. Despite her doctors giving her a one percent chance of survival, Charlotte fought against the odds and is now learning to walk and talk again. However, the after effects of the stroke made it difficult, if not impossible, for Charlotte to truly be with her two babies and left her unable to live in her own home.
In a speech thanking the volunteers, Nick Knowles, presenter of DIY SOS, re-iterated, “When Charlotte had the stroke she was not able to bond with her babies. What we have been able to do is to build an environment where a mother can rebuild that bond. The family can now start their life.”
GD Environmental supplied the skips for the mammoth 9 day build, making up to 10 exchanges a day in order to maintain the pace of the extensive building work, which included building a double-storey rear extension to create a physio room and en-suite wet room, to ease Charlotte’s rehabilitation. The GD drivers travelled back and forth from their head office in Newport to Monmouth, in order to keep up with the demand of the re-construction.
GD Environmental’s Marketing Manager said, “It was an honour to be involved in such a worthwhile project and I was blown away with how many people pulled together throughout the construction, from the individuals to the small businesses who supplied their trade and time.”
With a deadline of April 15th, the team, ranging from electricians to plumbers and plasterers, worked into the night to finish the ambitious project, completing the finishing touches at 2.30am.
Greeting the volunteers after the emotional reveal, Mr Fairlie said: “We are overwhelmed, humbled and excited. You’ve not just built us a house, but a home.”
“This has been so amazing. The community spirit has been beyond anything else I have witnessed.”
